I recently bought a new pc and it came with PCTEL AMR modem. I was having so much trouble connecting to Sysmatrix.net. I got disconnect constantly every five minutes or so. I finally got it to work sucessfully by disable the v.90/kflex in the init string. If you have problem using this specific modem with Sysmatrix then you might want to use this init string:

n0s37=12

This will force your modem to use the old reliable V.34 standard. You will connect maximum at 33.6K but you would never get disconnect.
